The southern portion of the island preserves
the Azorian roots of the city. Besides the historical
housing, the Freguesia do Ribeirão da Ilha
concentrates one gastronomic corridor based on
oysters and shellfishs.
The portion southeast is known because the trails
surrounded by the Mata Atlantica and for beaches
with medium surf, ideal for learning the surfing.
The Pantano do Sul maintains the fishing tradition
and its specialized seafood restaurants are always
crowded with tourists as well as natives.
There is also the starting point for those who
want to iniciate a trail to the paradisiac and
wild beach of Lagoinha do Norte.
In the southmost point of the island rests the
Naufragado beach, with its century XIX lighthouse.
